Description:

Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) is seeking a passionate, full-time attorney to join our Richmond office to support our Health, Public Benefits, and Elder Law Practice and assist with our Medical-Legal Partnership with VCU Health at the Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR).

The person selected for this role will:
  • Engage in outreach and community education in CVLAS' core practice areas of family, housing, employment, consumer, health, and public benefits on-site at CHoR for up to 20 hours per week
  • Contribute to and strengthen CVLAS' Medical-Legal Partnership by building relationships with CHoR providers, case managers, and social workers
  • Provide legal advice and representation in matters related to health, public benefits, elder law, housing, family, employment, and consumer issues
  • Most common matters referred by CHoR include domestic violence prevention, custody and visitation, housing repairs, SNAP/TANF benefits, and Medicaid
  • Represent clients in courts and administrative hearings, and engage in negotiation and non-litigation advocacy
  • Conduct legal research and develop strategic case analyses
  • Draft and file legal documents
  • Maintain accurate case records in CVLAS's case management system

Must possess the following:

  • Active Virginia State Bar license
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, health equity, and serving low-income communities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Oral advocacy and negotiation experience
  • Knowledge and/or experience with CVLAS' core practice areas, specifically family, housing, and health/public benefits; 3-5 years of experience preferred
  • Experience representing clients in court or administrative hearings is preferred
