Description:
Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) is seeking a passionate, full-time attorney to join our Richmond office to support our Health, Public Benefits, and Elder Law Practice and assist with our Medical-Legal Partnership with VCU Health at the Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR).The person selected for this role will:
- Engage in outreach and community education in CVLAS' core practice areas of family, housing, employment, consumer, health, and public benefits on-site at CHoR for up to 20 hours per week
- Contribute to and strengthen CVLAS' Medical-Legal Partnership by building relationships with CHoR providers, case managers, and social workers
- Provide legal advice and representation in matters related to health, public benefits, elder law, housing, family, employment, and consumer issues
- Most common matters referred by CHoR include domestic violence prevention, custody and visitation, housing repairs, SNAP/TANF benefits, and Medicaid
- Represent clients in courts and administrative hearings, and engage in negotiation and non-litigation advocacy
- Conduct legal research and develop strategic case analyses
- Draft and file legal documents
- Maintain accurate case records in CVLAS's case management system
- Active Virginia State Bar license
- Demonstrated commitment to justice, health equity, and serving low-income communities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Oral advocacy and negotiation experience
- Knowledge and/or experience with CVLAS' core practice areas, specifically family, housing, and health/public benefits; 3-5 years of experience preferred
- Experience representing clients in court or administrative hearings is preferred
