Description of Work:
The Attorney Supervisor is an attorney management position that supports the Deputy Chiefs and the appointed Public Defender Director, playing a crucial role in supervising, mentoring, and training Assistant Public Defenders who represent clients in criminal misdemeanor and felony cases. The Attorney Supervisor will oversee attorneys in their daily work representing clients holistically, working closely with the social work team, the investigative team, and support staff to ensure that each client entrusted to our care is provided the finest client-centered legal representation. This position also provides operational/administrative assistance to the Deputy Chiefs, the Director, and other members of the Executive Team for the daily operations of the law office including recruitment efforts, performance evaluations, professional development initiatives, and compliance with all Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) Standards as required by law.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • Must have a minimum of ten (10) years' experience as a practicing attorney in the State of Michigan AND five (5) years specializing in the area of criminal law.
  • Must possess a Law Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License.
  • Must be eligible for Membership in the State Bar Association and be licensed to practice Law in the State of Michigan.
  • Must be able to provide personal transportation for job related duties throughout the County if a County-owned Vehicle is unavailable.

Note: Must be able to secure clearance to enter correctional facilities.

Preferred but not required:
Bilingual in Spanish highly desired.

An employee in this class performs generally sedentary work activities requiring occasional lifting of objects weighing thirty-five (35) pounds or less.

Environmental Conditions:
An Attorney Supervisor works in a variety (i.e. County Courthouse, Jail, Public Defenders Office, etc.) of locations and additional travel may be required.
