General Summary:This position supports the Premises and Liability Defense practice and works closely with the Partner on matters involving bodily injury and premises liability claims. The role includes managing assigned matters, conducting depositions, drafting and arguing motions, participating in mediations, and assisting with trial preparation. The position requires familiarity with medical records and their impact on claims evaluation, strong motion practice skills, and the ability to travel for site inspections and depositions as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, the associate may provide indirect guidance or task coordination to legal assistants, clerical staff, or interns in connection with case preparation and defense-related activities.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supports the Partner in the defense of premises liability and bodily injury matters.
- Manages assigned cases from intake through resolution, including discovery, motion practice, mediation, and trial preparation.
- Reviews and analyzes medical records and related documentation and evaluates how medical history impacts injury claims and damages.
- Conducts plaintiff depositions and prepares deposition outlines, exhibits, and summaries.
- Drafts and argues dispositive motions, including motions for summary judgment, and appear at hearings.
- Drafts motions in limine and supports evidentiary strategy.
- Participates in mediations and settlement conferences as assigned.
- Conducts and attends on-site inspections and in-person depositions; travel is primarily centralized and typically 2-3 days at a time as needed.
- Ensures compliance with court rules, procedural deadlines, and case management requirements.
- Collaborates with legal assistants, paralegals, and the Partner to ensure matters progress efficiently.
Education & Experience:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Florida Bar.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience handling premises liability and/or bodily injury defense matters.
- Experience conducting plaintiff depositions required.
- Experience drafting summary judgment motions and motions in limine required.
- Mediation experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Travel is required for site inspections, depositions, hearings, and mediations; travel is generally regional and centralized.
- Hybrid or remote work arrangement when not attending in-person litigation activities.
- Extended hours may be required to meet litigation deadlines.
