Attorney
Position Summary:
Defends Chesapeake Employers', its policyholders and clients, in cases set for hearing before the Workers' Compensation Commission and the Courts of this State.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviews files set for hearing and appeal and makes recommendations to the Claims Department regarding resolution of the issues, settlement of the case and/or further preparation for defense. Routinely handles complex litigation.
- Defends cases in which the company and/or company insured or clients or the State of Maryland is a party before the Workers Compensation Commission and the Courts of this State.
- Conducts training on workers' compensation law and practice, at the direction of the VP of Legal Services
- Researches and writes appellate briefs, trial memoranda and pleadings.
- Argues cases before the Appellate Courts of Maryland.
- Records hearing and appeal results in appropriate files.
- Handles special litigation and projects
- Assigned special accounts, units, or departments, as requested by VP of Legal.
- Prosecutes and/or assists in the prosecution of recovery of liens, overpayments and premium in the District and Circuit Courts.
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives; adheres to departmental policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, and consistently exhibits Chesapeake's Values and Behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills, Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor Degree and admitted to Maryland Bar.
- 7+ years of active, first seat, litigation experience.
- Experience in defending workers' compensation claims required.
- First seat jury trial and practice before Maryland's Appellate Court.
- Knowledge of the legal aspects of insurance operations.
- Active Maryland license to practice law.
- Knowledge, skill and ability to handle heavy caseload with no supervision.
- Excellent academic, writing, advocacy skills, and interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the teammate is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The teammate is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The teammate may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities are required, which include close vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary:
$100,509-$155,788 (per year, commensurate with experience)
