Job Summary: The Attorney is responsible for responding to referrals from our advocates regarding domestic and sexual violence victims to provide legal information, possible representation and support, and appropriate advice and referrals. The Attorney will also assist in managing and facilitating legal support to victims and survivors in preparation for hearings and emergent matters within the realm of family law.

Duties & Responsibilities: This position is 25 hours per month. Answer incoming calls from clients regarding their cases. Conduct legal interviews. Provide legal advice regarding restraining order hearings and emergent family law matters. Provide appropriate referrals to outside agencies and services. Record quantitative data into the organizational database. Research legal issues as needed. Assist with developing pro se legal education materials—review referrals to determine client eligibility for services. Coordinate with advocates to determine the next steps for the client. Coordinate with advocates any services for the client beyond legal within the organization. Provide quarterly training to Wesley Shelter Staff and Advocates on changes to the laws and systems that could impact the work and services we provide at Wesley Shelter.

Education & Qualifications: Law Degree. North Carolina Bar Admission required. No disbarment or debarment issues on file. At least two years of experience litigating domestic and sexual violence and general family law issues. Demonstrated excellence in writing skills and legal research. Liability insurance is required. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred. Sensitivity to survivors of abuse. Values diversity.
