A Government Entity Legal Department is seeking a motivated Attorney to join our legal team. Our Attorneys represent State Fund's insured employers and other State Agencies of California, handling, defending and litigating workers' compensation related issues. Attorneys appear at depositions of parties and witnesses and handle administrative hearings at any Division of Workers' Compensation District Offices covered by the legal unit to which the Attorney is assigned and litigate in court.

Attorneys also appear in other judicial and administrative forums throughout California as required by business needs.

This position may be filled in one of the following locations: Bakersfield, Eureka, Fresno, Glendale, Oxnard, Pleasanton, Redding, Riverside, Rohnert Park, Sacramento, Salinas, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, Santa Ana, and Stockton

The Attorney will handle a hybrid caseload of both insured and State Contract cases and will appear at the Fresno WCAB for appearances, hearings, and/or trials as needed.

Under the direction and supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, you will…
  • Work closely with internal and external clients, drafting pleadings and correspondence, conducting discovery, negotiating, and drafting settlements, and making court appearances, including trials.
  • The duties require appearances and litigation in multiple and varied venues including the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, the courts of California and a variety of potential other administrative forums.
  • In addition, duties include participation in project work such as providing training to others, specialized assignments or conducting consolidated litigation involving the coordination of multiple parties and issues as necessary.

New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate salary range when applicable. Placement to alternate salary range may be based on education or experience identified in your state application.

Working Conditions:
Telework may be available and is subject to change based on State Fund guidelines and business needs.

The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

Selected candidate(s) hired may be required to attend in-person Onboarding at our Vacaville office with expenses for attendance paid by State Fund.

Desirable Qualifications:
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Worker's Compensation experience (preferred)
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication, research skills, and customer service/client relations skills.
  • Ability to write concisely and persuasively.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex medical reports.
  • Is a self-starter who takes initiative, has strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines while handling an active caseload.
