Description:Hennepin County's Adult Representation Services (ARS) department is seeking an Attorney with demonstrated experience representing clients in immigration matters and an interest in practicing in one of the following areas: housing, parents in child protection and child support contempt, guardianship, and civil commitment. Please note specific practice area experience and interest in your cover letter.
ARS provides high-quality, equitable representation to clients experiencing poverty in certain civil matters where appointment of counsel is necessary to protect a fundamental right. Our holistic legal team includes attorneys, investigators, paralegals, and social service experts.

Location and hours:
This position will be onsite in downtown Minneapolis at the Health Services Building located at 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
- Handle complex immigration cases before federal agencies and courts.
- Litigate complex cases in state court, negotiate and facilitate complex case resolutions.
- Interview clients and prospective witnesses or direct the investigations and interviews conducted by investigative staff.
- Coordinate resources for clients and families or direct the coordination of resources with legal support staff.
- Conduct or direct legal research which includes preparing or overseeing the drafting of briefs, memoranda, pleadings, and other legal papers; retaining electronic case records and files; and allocating resources to effectively manage a caseload consistent with office and divisional objectives.
- Mentor less-experienced staff in managing complex litigation.
- Participate in community-based outreach events.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota and two or more years of experience as an attorney.

- Immigration statutes, regulations, established precedents, and legal reference sources.
- Local laws and ordinances, established precedents, and legal reference sources.
- The principles, methods, and practices of legal research and investigation.
- Judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.
- Pleading and practicing effective presentation of court cases.
- Effective litigation skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; persuasive public speaking ability.
- Ability to:
- Independently handle cases of varying complexity
- Effectively use an electronic case management system.
