Job Description:Supports the Civil Division PIA Section by coordinating and processing Public Information Act (PIA) requests for Dallas County, including but not limited to those involving the County Clerk, Tax Assessor, District Clerk and District Attorney; prepares legal briefs for submission to the Texas Attorney General's Office, with additional duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Ensures legal compliance by interpreting and applying applicable laws and regulations related to the Public Information Act (PIA), including accurately determining what information must be disclosed and what is confidential or protected. Works assigned PIA requests by coordinating with departments to obtain responsive documents, reviewing and redacting documents, assessing legal exceptions to disclosure, conducting legal research on applicable law, preparing cost letters, and preparing documents for release. Reviews criminal case files, identifies responsive records to PIA, ensures legal compliance with sensitive/confidential information, and liaises with the District Attorney's Office on PIA matters. Meets PIA deadlines, including deadlines to submit Attorney General exception letter(s). Responds to department and requestor communications regarding PIAs. Trains and advises paralegals on PIA requests and applicable law. Handles third party PIA complaints, including gathering information and drafting assessments. Sends third-party interest letters, where applicable, to persons with an interest in the information the subject of a PIA request. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited law school with a current license to practice law in the State of Texas. Two (2) years and six (6) months of experience practicing law. Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Requires a current license to practice law in the State of Texas. Skilled in the use of standard software applications. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.
