Job Description and Duties:
Under the general direction of the Chief Counsel, Deputy Chief Counsel, and Assistant Chief Counsel the Attorney IV will handle the most difficult and sensitive legal issues involving the Department of State Hospitals (DSH). The Attorney IV is a legal specialist in the area of regulations and complex litigation involving challenges to regulations, hospital policies and programs, and matters relating to “conditions of confinement” challenges. The incumbent performs independent complex and critical legal analysis and prepares recommendations, prepares and coordinates responses, provides guidance to state hospital facilities and to the Legal Division (LD) and DSH management. Work at this level involves innovative theories, practices of law, specialization in an area of law overseen by or involving the Department, and may require contact with high level appointees, constitutional officers, members of the legislature, or their designee, and/or the public.

Working Conditions:
  • This position will report to either the DSH Headquarters at the Allenby Building in Sacramento or at Metropolitan State Hospital located in Norwalk. A hybrid Telework schedule, consistent with the State of California's in-office requirement, may be considered with prior approval from management.

  • Travel may be required up to 5%, including visits to all DSH facilities and courts throughout California.
  • DSH-Sacramento is located at an 11 floor high rise building.
