The Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) is recruiting to fill an Attorney III position in the Legal Affairs Bureau.

As a valued member of POST, the incumbent will work to continually enhance the professionalism of California law enforcement by working with POST staff and the POST Commission on legal issues involving development and implementation of training and selection standards, certification of police officers, investigation of police misconduct cases for purposes of decertification, and supporting POST's various bureaus with a wide range of legal issues involving POST's operations. Common tasks include working with executive management on various matters involving POST operations; working with POST's Professional Conduct Bureaus in investigation of police misconduct and the selection and preparation of cases for decertification; coordinating with the Office of the Attorney General regarding litigation involving POST; analyzing court records to determine peace officer disqualification; appearing before the Peace Officer Accountability Advisory Board and the POST Commission; responding to Public Records Act requests; handling internal personnel matters; analyzing local agency compliance with POST regulations; determining legal requirements for law enforcement training; implementing and interpreting legislative mandates; and drafting proposed legislative language.

Licensing requirement: Incumbent must maintain active membership in the California State Bar and be a member in good standing.

This position is subject to POST's Conflict of Interest Code. The incumbent is required to submit a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) within 30 days of assuming office, annually by April 1, and within 30 days of leaving office.

  • POST headquarters is located at 860 Stillwater Road, Suite 100, West Sacramento, near IKEA, Starbucks, and downtown Sacramento. This location has easy freeway access, is near many eateries, and offers FREE electric car charging stations, and FREE parking.
  • Hybrid telework is available for employees who can satisfactorily perform their essential work functions independently and remotely.
  • This position is Hybrid and may be eligible for telework, in accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy, and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.
  • Works in an office setting with artificial lighting and temperature control. Primarily sedentary for extended periods of time; uses a computer and other common office equipment; participates in meetings.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is critical to the successful performance of this position.

  • POST was established by the Legislature in 1959 to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement. The POST organization, with more than 260 staff members, functions under the direction of an Executive Director appointed by the Commission.
  • POST funding comes from the General Fund and the State Penalty Fund. The State Penalty Fund receives money from penalty assessments on criminal and traffic fines.
  • The POST Program is voluntary and incentive-based. Participating agencies agree to abide by the standards established by POST. More than 600 agencies participate in the POST Program and are eligible to receive the Commission's services and benefits.
