An American Auto Insurance Company is looking to hire an Attorney III in Albuquerque, NM to handle all Staff Counsel office activities relating to the defense of lawsuits against An American Auto Insurance Company insureds in liability suits, and on behalf of An American Auto Insurance Company in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM), and PIP suits or arbitrations, filed in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction in the state of New Mexico.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
  • Renders opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
  • Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, to include depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath, and defending all assigned matters by trial, arbitration, or mediation, as applicable.
  • Meet deadlines to respond to pleadings, and correspondence.
  • Appears timely in court, arbitrations, depositions, meetings, and other scheduled matters.
  • Adheres to An American Auto Insurance Company Code of Conduct, company policies and operating principles.
  • Conduct file audits and provide feedback on quality of file handling and expense management.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience of litigation, including insurance defense or personal injury.
  • Juris Doctor degree Required.
  • Admission to the New Mexico Bar Required.
  • Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New Mexico and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable.
  • Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences.
  • Location – Hybrid Eligible: This position requires 2 days working in office during orientation and attending in-person court hearings.
