This position has primary responsibility for legal work and independently represents and advises the various divisions and commissions of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (“Agriculture”). This position also represents Agriculture in litigation when Agriculture is sued at OAH or in State or Federal courts either independently or in a team of several attorneys. The position must master issues related to public records law, collections and other issues in order to successfully represent Agriculture.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Management Preferences:
  • Candidates with demonstrated excellence in legal writing, including experience drafting motions, briefs, and pleadings in both State and federal court, with the ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and persuasively.
  • Candidates with strong motion practice experience, including preparation and argument of dispositive and discovery motions, as well as familiarity with the Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Candidates who exhibit strong client service skills, including the ability to build effective working relationships with agency representatives, explain legal strategies in plain language, and exercise sound judgment in advising clients on litigation risk and case direction.

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and one year of professional legal experience. NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
