Summary:The purpose of this job within the organization is to provide quality and timely legal counsel to the City of Lubbock as an entity. Defend the interests of the City through preventative law and litigation, ensure that the day-to-day operations of the City are legally responsible, provide legal advice necessary for making sound legislative and administrative decisions, and make certain that the commitments and contracts binding the City are legally appropriate.
Essential Functions:
- Advises and assists city council, city boards and commissions, City Manager's Office, and all city departments on various municipal law issues, including environmental law, oil and gas law, civil service law, metropolitan planning, and health care.
- Drafts and reviews contracts, court documents, and court filings for the City of Lubbock.
- Researches, drafts, and reviews potential ordinances, resolutions, and other official documents for the City of Lubbock.
- Researches various city codes to facilitate code enforcement by various city departments.
- Conducts detailed legal research to facilitate trial brief preparation and rendering of legal opinions.
- Communicate with elected officials regarding legal implications of policy formation.
- Researches and evaluates legal issues and questions and interact with elected and appointed official to offer creative and legal solutions to complex problems.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and licensed to practice before all courts of the State of Texas with an additional four years of responsible experience in the practice of law in the State of Texas.
