Description:
Job Summary:Under general direction of the Lawrence County Council, attorney serves as legal advisor and counsel for the governing fiscal body of Lawrence County. Directs and provides legal advice to the Lawrence County Council and attends their regular meetings, special meetings, and meetings held in executive session. Work is reviewed through meetings, reports, observations and with periodic evaluations based on performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advising: Provides formal and informal legal advice to the Lawrence County Council.
- Drafting Legal Documents: Creating contracts, resolutions, letters and other administrative documents as necessary.
- Legal Research and Analysis: Researching and interpreting laws, regulations, and case law to advise the Lawrence County Council on legal matters.
- Litigation: Representing the Lawrence County Council in actions authorized by the Lawrence County Council. Provides legal defense counsel in lawsuits and actions brought against the Lawrence County Council, except in cases where special legal counsel is engaged.
- Communication: Works closely and collaborates with the Lawrence County Auditor's office and other colleagues to review various matters relating to county government.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
- Membership in “good standing” with The Indiana Bar.
- Experience in county government or finance is important.
- Knowledge of Roberts Rules of Order, the “Open Door” law, and state statutory and constitutional law.
