The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) seeks to fill a Staff Attorney (Level 1, 2, or 3) position within the Office of the General Counsel's External Operations Section.

You will join a unique group of attorneys that serve a dynamic set of internal clients and resolve challenging legal issues for the State of Georgia and hard-working Georgians. You will be responsible for providing analysis and recommendations on legal issues relating to the Department's Local Government Services Division, with special focus on the Unclaimed Property Program.

Key Duties:
  • Assist the Unclaimed Property Program with implementation and administration of new statutory mandates.
  • Review and advise on questions related to property claims and program registrations.
  • Conduct legal compliance reviews of business processes in an area with new and emerging questions of law and policy.
  • Serve as the Department's liaison to the Office of the Attorney General on cases arising from property claim disputes.
  • Minimum Entry Qualifications

Attorney 1 (Pay Grade K – $65,520)

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License).

Attorney 2 (Pay Grade L – $72,800)

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and one (1) year of relevant legal experience; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 1 (LEP020).

Attorney 3 (Pay Grade M – $80,000)

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and two (2) years of relevant legal - experience; or two (2) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021).

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Legal Writing Sample: Submission of a writing sample, not to exceed 10 pages, from a brief, memo, or other similar document. This must be attached to your profile/application.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide professional legal services to agency divisions and executive leadership.
  • Teamwork & Cooperation: Ability to work collaboratively with project teams, both within the legal group and among business divisions.
  • Results Orientation: Ability to complete projects with limited supervision.
  • Judgment & Decision Making: Ability to weigh the needs of the agency to determine the best course of action for all parties in an evolving legal landscape.
  • Communication skills: Ability to analyze and organize facts and present them in a clear and logical form, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
  • Accountability: Ability to accept responsibility for one's actions with honesty and integrity, while remaining committed to organizational success.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience drafting legal documents such as memoranda, agency determination letters, regulations, and presentation or training materials for legal programs.
  • Experience reviewing contracts or performing contract related due diligence.
  • Experience preparing information and records for use in administrative and/or judicial hearings.
  • Prior experience or education in one or more of the following areas:
  • Unclaimed property administration;
  • Financial instruments;
  • Wills, trusts and estates; or
  • State and local tax.

Position Details:
  • Status & Pay Grade: Unclassified – Pay Grade K, L, or M (depending on experience)
  • Location: Department of Revenue Agency Headquarters, 2595 Century Parkway NE, Atlanta GA 30345
  • **This is a hybrid position allowing for a telework schedule of up to four days per week after training and proficiency in all assigned areas has been demonstrated and is subject to change based on DOR policies and ability to meet performance expectations.
