Description:
The Attorney role provides legal advice and counsel in support of Burns & McDonnell's global engineering, construction, design-build, and EPC operations. This role partners closely with project teams and executive management to deliver practical, timely legal guidance on transactional, operational, and risk-related matters that advance the Burns & McDonnell's business objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal standards.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Provide ongoing legal advice and counsel related to engineering, construction, design-build, EPC, and professional services projects.
- Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including prime contracts, subcontracts, joint venture and consortium agreements, MOUs, term sheets, and related transactional documents.
- Advise executives, management, and project teams on contractual obligations, interpretation of terms and conditions, and legal and commercial risk.
- Support project teams by providing timely, responsive legal guidance aligned with Burns & McDonnell's business goals and risk tolerance.
- Maintain compliance with Burns & McDonnell contracting protocols, commercial standards, policies, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify legal issues, assess risk, and develop clear, actionable recommendations.
- Collaborate with and manage outside counsel as needed for litigation, disputes, claims, or specialty legal matters.
- Participate in the Company's risk management processes and provide regular updates to the General Counsel regarding contract status, risk analysis, and compliance matters.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across the organization and within the Legal Department.
- Mentor and support the development of attorneys and legal team members; assist with internal legal training initiatives as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Burns & McDonnell policies, procedures, and standards.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Ability to obtain Missouri licensure.
- Experience in the construction industry, supporting engineering, construction, design-build, or EPC projects is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in contract drafting, review, and negotiations.
- Working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and legal principles affecting engineering and construction services.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences, including senior leadership.
- Sound judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
- Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage a large workload with tight timelines.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of cross-functional teams.
- Must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively and professionally in a team-oriented environment.
- Commitment to working safely and in compliance with Burns & McDonnell's safety policies and procedures.
