Job Description:
This position serves as an Attorney Advisor located in the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA), in Washington, D.C.

The Attorney Advisor is responsible for providing expert legal advice; managing the Department of Justice's relationship with Congress; and planning, evaluating, and advising on legislation of interest to the Department of Justice.

Duties include:
  • Managing Department responses to OMB requests for views on positions proposed by other executive branch agencies.
  • Advising Department components about legislative actions and options, taking responsibility for assuring that legislation proposed by the Department components is appropriate in accomplishing the Department's legislative goals.
  • Preparing communications to appropriate Congressional officials transmitting legislative proposals and explaining and justifying them.
  • Conferring with members of Congressional committees and/or personnel of their professional staff to provide explanations, information, or address objections to proposed legislation.
  • Providing analysis and evaluation of a wide range of operational issues to provide component leadership with a sound qualitative and quantitative basis to formulate judgments, select alternatives, and make decisions.
  • Preparing responses to Congressional inquiries or inquiries from individual Members of Congress.
  • Applying an expert knowledge of directives, laws, policies, and regulations relating to agency legal activities and operations to provide guidance and assistance on a range of matters and operating procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a J.D. degree (or equivalent), be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least 8 years post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience. Prior Congressional experience is preferred.
