4/Administrative Law Judges at DAL are responsible for conducting
professional administrative proceedings and writing clear decisions that
are easy for parties to understand. DAL seeks individuals with
experience in administrative hearings, trial practice, or working for a
court. The selected candidate will need to be organized, able to work
independently, meet deadlines, and manage a significant caseload.
Minimum Qualifications:

Job Duties:Attorney/Administrative Law Judges/Referees:
In this role, you will:
- Conduct public, adversarial, evidentiary hearings throughout the state involving a constitutionally protected property right and involving various and complex legal issues; examines or cross-examines witnesses as necessary to fully develop the facts; rules on the admissibility of evidence; rules on procedural matters; administers the oath to witnesses and maintains judicial decorum.
- Researches and interprets the applicable law and jurisprudence; applies the law to the facts found and independently reaches a decision; prepares and issues a formal written decision containing findings of fact, conclusions of law, the rationale for the decision, and the judgment, which judgment is binding on the parties unless judicial review is sought.
- Handles different types of hearings for various state agencies and must be knowledgeable in all assigned areas of law.
- Participates in the peer review process and obtains subject matter reviews when required
- Be proficient in operating basic computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, and be capable of learning to effectively utilize DAL's computerized case management system and telephonic and video conferencing technologies.
Position-Specific Details:
- Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a temporary job appointment, probational appointment, etc.
- Work Schedule: Normal business hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Opportunities for a flex-schedule may be granted upon eligibility
- Compensation: The maximum amount listed for the salary range is the amount a person can make throughout their career in the position and not the maximum amount we are allowed to pay at the time of hire.
Other Important Information:
- Applicants must have a license to practice law in Louisiana, be in good standing with the LSBA, and be a resident of Louisiana. This position is domiciled in DAL's Baton Rouge office. Outside law practice is restricted.
- Travel may be required within the state, with occasional overnight stays.
- **Due to statutory requirements applicants who possess at least eight years or more experience practicing law will be preferred.****
- Administrative Law Judges must have been engaged in the actual practice of law for at least five years prior to their appointment at DAL (La. R.S.49:994).
- Administrative Law Judges at DAL are placed in a pool and pulled at random to be selected to serve on the Ethics Adjudicatory Board. To serve on this board, the attorney must have two years of experience as an Administrative Law Judge with the Division of Administrative Law and not less than ten years in the practice of law (La. R.S.42:1141.2).
