UPS is seeking a talented and motivated Associate General Counsel to join its global legal team in Atlanta, GA. The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee and manage health and safety (H&S) and environmental matters. This position reports to a Deputy General Counsel, who reports to the Company's General Counsel.
Job Description:
The Associate General Counsel will manage a broad array of H&S and environmental matters. This position will: provide counsel on H&S and environmental issues; handle regulatory enforcement matters and related litigation; manage outside counsel to oversee the defense of matters in courts and with administrative agencies throughout the United States; and draft and negotiate settlement agreements.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provides guidance to support consistent compliance with applicable H&S and environmental laws, regulations, and policies
- Collaborates with other legal department members and internal business leaders to drive H&S and environmental strategy and upstream risk prevention
- Evaluates factual circumstances surrounding legal matters to gain a better understanding and to ensure accuracy of the facts
- Coordinates with outside counsel in the representation of the company's position to ensure a consistent, accurate, and complete explanation and defense of UPS's legal position
- Collaborates with outside counsel in developing strategies to ensure matters are defended and resolved appropriately and in a cost-effective manner
- Manages outside counsel and consultants in connection with regulatory investigations, enforcement matters, litigation, and other legal proceedings
- Reviews outside counsel invoices, manages budgets, and monitors legal expenditures
- Tracks outside counsel expenditures against financial targets and provides forecasts of future expenditures
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong knowledge of H&S and environmental laws and regulations
- Significant experience managing H&S and environmental matters in courts and with administrative agencies
- Ability to effectively manage a large matter docket and outside counsel
- Experience advising clients on H&S and environmental matters and risks
- Ability to use multiple strategies to remove barriers to agreements, persuade others, and win concessions effectively
- Strategic and analytical thinker who works collaboratively internally and externally
- Prioritizes complex, material, and/or multi-functional risks to the enterprise; provides guidance regarding risk treatments
- Ability to learn and apply processes, procedures, and methods within UPS's operations in detail
Qualifications:
- Minimum of six years at a law firm and/or in-house with experience managing H&S and environmental matters
- Must be a member of a state bar in good standing, with an active license
- Must be currently located in the geographic area of the position or willing to relocate yourself
- Employer will not sponsor a visa for this or future positions
Preferred:
- Experience supporting a large, multi-site, operationally complex organization
- Familiarity with transportation, logistics, aviation, manufacturing, industrial, or distribution environments
- Experience advising on workplace safety programs and operational risk mitigation strategies
- Knowledge of hazardous materials transportation and compliance requirements
- Experience partnering with engineering, safety, compliance, and operational leaders
- Strong matter management and outside counsel oversight experience
