Description:

The Associate General Counsel (Compliance) will execute internal controls that promote adherence to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and assist the General Counsel with legal review and compliance issues.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Perform research and provide interpretations of rules, regulations and policies as requested by General Counsel.
  • Collaborate with and advise Student Affairs, Campus Safety and internal departments to ensure on-going compliance with FERPA, Title IX, the Violence Against Woman Act (VAWA) and the Clery Act in the investigation and reporting of crime and judicial violations on campus.
  • Advise Human Resources to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations including but not limited to FMLA, FLSA, ADA, EEO, USERRA and OSHA.
  • Assist General Counsel with internal audits of regulated areas on campus to ensure compliance, as needed.
  • Stay up to date on current trends and legislative updates relevant to institutions of Higher Education and communicate this information to the appropriate constituents
  • Serve as a legal resource for all departments.
  • Develop, coordinate and participate in educational and training programs to enhance compliance and awareness of compliance issues.
  • Coordinate with appropriate department(s) to ensure enforcement of all federal, state and local regulations concerning hazardous materials, and all other physical and biological agents.
  • Advise on the development and implementation of comprehensive policies, procedures, programs, reporting mechanisms, services and activities to satisfy compliance requirements set by the University, sponsors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Assist General Counsel with federal and state assurances relating to internal control and compliance issues.
  • Review legal/compliance implications of facilities projects.
  • Review, draft, and advise to ensure University contracts follow Federal, State, and sponsorship requirements.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor
  • Admission to the Ohio bar or ability to obtain admission upon hire
  • The ability to be cross designated as an Assistant Attorney General (Additional interview and background check will be required)
  • Minimum five years' experience practicing law with at least 3 years in higher education, public sector, or compliance related practice
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong collaboration and time- management skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations applicable higher education compliance issues
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple matters under deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of experience in higher education, government or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation, policy development, or regulatory compliance
  • Familiarity with labor relations and employment law
  • Experience presenting and training on compliance/legal issues, Risk Management and/or compliance
