What You'll Do:
- Serve as a go‑to legal partner for all things construction contracting which will involve leading contract review and negotiation efforts for major construction projects, as well as ensuring that terms align with business goals, risk tolerances, and operational realities. It will also involve collaborating with operations leaders to identify and mitigate risk.
- Be a strategic legal advisor to construction project teams and executives by summarizing complex contract terms; resolving conflicts with customers, subcontractors and suppliers; and translating regulatory and contractual requirements into practical guidance that supports project success.
- Provide hands‑on support for federal, state and local contracting matters, including FAR/DFARS interpretation, risk assessments, and proposal strategy. Break down FAR, DFARS, and other legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance that empowers non‑lawyers to make informed decisions. Advise internal stakeholders on procurement integrity, bid preparation, certifications and representations to federal clients.
- Provide legal guidance on Buy America/Build America, Davis-Bacon, prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements.
- Develop engaging training programs and partner with our operations, procurement, and finance teams to streamline processes, reduce risk, and improve our federal contract lifecycle efficiency.
- Additional duties may include:
- Leading or assisting with internal investigations, disclosures, and responses to government audits or inquiries.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of non-construction related agreements that support our growth and protect our interests.
- Track evolving legal developments and help the business stay ahead of the curve.
- Collaborate with the Ethics & Compliance team to support key compliance initiatives as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you bring:
- A commitment to operating with honesty and integrity.
- JD from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar.
- 6+ years of hands‑on experience in construction and government contracting law. In-house experience preferred but not required.
- Strong proficiency with the FAR and DFARS.
- A talent for translating complex legal concepts into clear, practical guidance.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust across diverse teams.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts effectively.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to work primarily out of our headquarters located in Westerville, Ohio or at a Kokosing office in Annapolis Junction, Maryland; Richmond, Virginia; or Chesapeake, Virginia.
- Willingness to travel 5-10% of the time.
