Description:

The Department of the Government of New York City is seeking to fill an Associate General Counsel position in its Office of the General Counsel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the representation of City Council and Council Members in a wide variety of litigation matters, including challenges to the validity of local laws, separation of powers issues, First Amendment claims, and employment law disputes.
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance related to ethics, conflicts of interest, procurement, transactions, and compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies affecting the City Council.
  • Handle other matters in the General Counsel's Office as may be assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in New York State.
  • 6+ years of litigation experience in federal and state court (which can include judicial clerkships).
  • General knowledge about New York City government and/or local government issues.
  • Stellar analytical, brief-writing, and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and an inclination to be proactive.
  • Demonstrated competence and confidence to operate with credibility at senior levels.
  • Ability to rapidly prioritize as well as execute while exhibiting good judgment.
  • Must possess a collegial and collaborative mindset.
