Job Summary:
The Associate General Counsel partners with leaders and stakeholders across the enterprise to deliver practical guidance on labor and employment matters, manage disputes and litigation, support the drafting and negotiation of contracts, as needed, and handle subsidiary corporate governance, with a particular emphasis on the operations of Hyundai Translead's Illinois manufacturing plant entity, Hyundai Translead Manufacturing America. The role offers opportunity for an in-house Illinois labor and employment attorney to advise directly on labor and employment while expanding their practice into contract drafting and editing, as well as general legal advice and support for our U.S. manufacturing facility.

The Associate General Counsel will initially serve as an individual contributor, providing day‑to‑day legal counsel and strategic guidance to internal stakeholders across the enterprise, with a particular focus on Hyundai Translead Manufacturing America.

As the enterprise evolves, this role may expand to include the oversight and mentoring of legal or administrative support personnel, such as a paralegal, administrative professional, or junior attorney, as organizational needs and resources require.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide timely, business-focused legal advice and support to internal stakeholders on a broad range of matters within scope of the position.
  • Deliver labor and employment counseling support, including interpretation and application of workplace policies, practices, and applicable laws, in Illinois primarily with additional operational sites in California and other U.S. states as needed.
  • Support employment litigation and dispute-related matters, including coordination with internal partners and outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements and legal documents, including contract drafting and editing, to support operational and commercial needs.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate legal risks and mitigation options in a clear, solutions-oriented manner.
  • Partner cross-functionally with HR, Operations, Finance and other business teams to support compliant decision-making and effective implementation.
  • Assist with development, review, and maintenance of policies, templates, playbooks, and training materials within the job scope.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of relevant legal developments and apply that knowledge to support business decisions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for and proactively own all aspects of Illinois labor and employment legal advice and counselling, particularly for a majority wage-and-hour workforce;
  • Provide advanced labor counseling, advise on workforce engagement, and own risk assessments for sensitive or complex issues.
  • Direct employment litigation strategy in partnership with business leaders and under the direct reporting line of General Counsel, including cost-effective management of outside counsel,
  • Draft and edit contracts and related processes, including template governance and clause library improvements, in collaboration with Senior Counsel- Transactional.
  • Serve as the primary legal point of contact and provide day-to-day legal advice regarding operational matters and corporate governance at the manufacturing subsidiary, overseeing a broad range of legal issues on a day-to-day basis.
  • Provides timely, business-friendly legal advice while escalating significant or novel issues to the General Counsel as appropriate. Support broader subsidiary or enterprise initiatives as needed.
  • Role is structured to allow for potential future supervisory responsibility, which may include oversight or mentoring of legal or administrative personnel, subject to organizational requirements and approval.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • JD, active bar license, or ability to timely obtain and maintain active license to practice law in Illinois
  • 7years of relevant legal experience
  • 7 years of Illinois labor and employment law experience
  • Preferred Education and Experience Requirements
  • In-house labor and employment law experience, specifically with a wage-and-hour workforce in Illinois
  • Exposure to California labor and employment law also an asset.
