Job Summary:The Associate General Counsel provides legal advice in a variety of areas, including employment and labor relations. Additional responsibilities include drafting, reviewing and recommending language for various University contract instruments; advising University community members on various federal and or state compliance matters; drafting and reviewing University policy and procedures; monitoring and advising on legislative and regulatory matters; assisting in the review of open records request; performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Job Description:
- Oversee designated administrative functions under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel.
- Draft legal documents, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Provide support for major initiatives.
- Prepare ad hoc reports and conduct research as assigned by the Vice President and General Counsel.
- Monitor policy by acting as approving authority.
- Assume line responsibility for specific administration function(s).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A JD or equivalent degree from an ABA accredited law school; admission to practice law in Illinois; three to five years of related experience; a willingness to take on a broad range of responsibilities consistent with practice in a communication skills, proficient in legal research and writing.

- Ability to provide timely, consistent, sound and practical legal advice, counseling, training and documentation related to wide range of academic and operational matters, working closely in support of legal department staff, in a fast-paced, complex higher education environment.
- Strong knowledge of faculty and student affairs required;
- Strong writing and drafting skills;
- Ability to function effectively and collaboratively as part of a team that includes business people, academics and other attorneys;
- Must work well as a team member in a small collaborative legal team;
- Strong client counseling skills, from both the legal and business perspectives, with the ability to differentiate between the two;
- Ability to deliver legal advice in an understandable manner and in such formats as may be desired by the organization, including through written correspondence, memoranda, briefs, and presentations, with little or no editing or revision by supervisors;
- Evidence of contributing to and functioning as a leader in the professional development of colleagues and/or leadership in the profession; of contributing to the development of the profession (e.g., NACUA, state bar associations, CLE presentations) and the development and progress of clients; and
- A strong ability to develop and maintain collegial professional relationships with colleagues and clients.
