Role of The Position
The Associate Director of Career Development will assist the Assistant Dean of Career Development in providing career planning services to students and alumni of the Boyd School of Law. The Associate Director will focus in particular on providing specialized services to those students and graduates who begin their careers in judicial clerkships. Responsibilities include advising and disseminating information to students seeking judicial clerkship positions, creating and executing programming to educate students about these areas, building and maintaining relationships with judges, creating opportunities for students to network with employers, and counseling students generally but with a particular focus on judicial clerkships. The Associate Director will assist the Assistant Dean of Career Development with planning and coordinating on-campus interviews, overseeing fellowship and internship programs, planning and executing networking receptions and mock interview programs. The Associate Director will also assist with maintaining the Career Development Office (CDO) internal and external websites and online job database, as well as collecting and reporting graduate employment information. The Associate Director will provide alumni programming and employer outreach & events.

Provide programming and organizing events for students and alumni
  • Develop, maintain, and coordinate programming and resources for students and alumni.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of On-Campus Interviews and Mock Interview Programs.
  • Create opportunities for students to network with legal employers.
  • Develop and conduct programming related to government and judicial clerkship employment and job search strategies.
  • Assist Assistant Dean with planning and holding workshops on a wide variety of job-related issues.
  • Assist with executing other Career Development Office programs as needed.
  • Participate in evening and weekend activities (such as networking events) as required.

Improve placement numbers and provide students with advice to facilitate successful job searches.
  • Provide individual career counseling to students and alumni.
  • Review student and alumni résumés and cover letters and provide feedback.
  • Counsel students and alumni regarding their job searches.
  • Field student/alum inquiries.
  • Conduct mock interviews.

Educate students and alumni about judicial clerkship opportunities to increase the number of graduates who are employed in these areas.
  • Manage and coordinate programs to place JD students in judicial internship, externship, and clerkship opportunities.
  • Provide outreach to members of the judiciary and staff, particularly in state courts, to gauge needs and ensure appropriate placements.
  • Review resumes, conduct mock interviews, and otherwise counsel JD students and alumni in applying for judicial positions.
  • Work with the law school externship director to develop judicial internship and externship opportunities and identify students for those opportunities.

Create and maintain resources related to job placement and professional development
  • Ensure that handbooks and handouts on resume drafting, interview skills, cover letters, networking, etc. are regularly updated.
  • Regularly monitor and update internal and external websites.
  • Maintain and regularly update social media accounts.
  • Draft content for weekly newsletters to students and alumni.
  • Create and update handouts to address career trends and professional development needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a JD from an ABA accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

At least 2-3 years of experience in law school administration and/or law school career advising, with limited exceptions for attorneys with experience in multiple components of the legal job market.

Knowledge of legal processes, such as judicial clerkship application process, knowledge of local and national employment trends, including in- and out-of-state job search techniques, methods, and procedures for seeking professional legal employment.

The ideal candidate will possess a flexible and positive attitude, team-player mentality, compassion, and passion for helping law students and alumni reach their professional goals. Excellent organizational skills, oral communication and presentation skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and employers. Attention to detail is required as well as strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills. Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Zoom, Word, Google forms, and Excel, and experience with databases and web-based programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Judicial clerkship experience.

At least 3-5 years of experience in law school administration and/or law school career advising.

Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, Google forms/email, learning new software or a similar law school career services employment program.
