Job Description:We're seeking a skilled and pragmatic Employment Attorney to join our legal team and provide counsel on a broad range of labor and employment matters across all A Pet Insurance Company teams located in the U.S. Those with experience in employment law in Canada or globally may have the opportunity to take on a broader scope of responsibility. This role will provide proactive guidance to business leaders and partner closely with People Operations (HR) to manage complex employee issues, as well as lead or support employment litigation and compliance efforts. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with excellent judgment and a collaborative approach to navigating sensitive matters while balancing business needs and risk mitigation.
This position is open to candidates in the Seattle area. You will have a hybrid remote/in-office schedule, working from our casual, pet-friendly office at least three days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic advice on a variety of employment compliance issues, including workplace conduct, hiring, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, disciplinary actions, separations, and employee relations.
- Draft, review, and update employment agreements, separation agreements, handbooks, and internal policies, and advise on restrictive covenants and enforceability of non-compete, non-solicit, and confidentiality agreements, ensuring multi-jurisdictional regulatory compliance
- Proactively guide the business through compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including advising on evolving legislative developments
- Manage/advise on litigation strategy and EEOC responses
- Manage outside counsel in class action and single-plaintiff employment litigation
- Develop strategies to mitigate risk and resolve workplace disputes in partnership with People Operations and A Pet Insurance Company Leadership
- Develop subject matter expertise to support company locations in multiple states.
- 5+ years of relevant employment law experience; law firm experience preferred
- Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. college or university and membership in at least one U.S. state bar; WA preferred
- Experience in identifying employment law risks and formulating risk mitigation strategies, as well as in providing practical, timely, and solution-oriented advice and counseling to business clients at various levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex employee relations issues with sound judgment and discretion
- Strong understanding of U.S. federal and state employment law frameworks
- Canadian employment experience is a plus
- Excellent communication skills and ability to partner effectively with HR, business leaders, and executive stakeholders
