Job Summary:Melchert Hubert Sjodin, PLLP is a well-established, highly respected law firm serving individuals and businesses in the southwest Twin Cities metro. Due to continued growth, we are seeking to hire 2 associate attorneys to join our law firm in the municipal law and family law practice areas. These positions offer exciting opportunities to work alongside senior attorneys in a collaborative and professional environment. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skillset.
The municipal law associate attorney will work directly with cities and other local governmental agencies on meaningful, community-impacting matters. The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 2 years of experience in municipal law, real estate law, or a closely related practice area and have the skills to advise during council, board, and commission meetings.
The family law associate attorney position involves negotiating and litigating a broad range of challenging family law issues including divorce, child support, custody issues, mediations, paternity rights, etc. The ideal candidate would have 2+ years of experience, be a self-starter, willing to be involved in the community and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to advocate client interests.
Municipal Law Attorney Responsibilities
- Represent municipalities and other public entities in a broad range of municipal law matters
- Advise clients on land use, zoning, development agreements, and real estate transactions
- Attend and advise at council, board, and commission meetings
- Draft ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and related legal documents
- Work closely with experienced municipal attorneys in a team-oriented setting
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in municipal law, real estate law, or a closely related practice area
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota (or ability to obtain licensure promptly)
- Strong legal writing, research, and communication skills
- Professional judgment, integrity, and a strong work ethic

- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative firm culture
Represent clients in all areas of family law, including divorce and legal separation, custody and parenting time, child support and spousal maintenance, property division, domestic abuse and protection orders, adoption, paternity, and related matters.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research using tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw to support case strategies to prepare pleadings, motions, affidavits, settlement agreements, and discovery materials.
- Attend court hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials.
- Provide clear, compassionate legal counsel to clients and maintain regular communication.
- Manage a caseload efficiently, ensuring deadlines are met and high-quality work is delivered.
- Negotiate settlements and advocate strongly for client interests.
- Maintain accurate, detailed case notes and billing records.
- Participate in business development, networking, and firm marketing initiatives as requested.
Family Law Attorney Skills
- Strong negotiation skills and conflict-resolution experience.
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota (or ability to obtain licensure promptly)
- Excellent legal research skills utilizing LexisNexis and Westlaw platforms for comprehensive case analysis.
- Proven ability to draft clear and persuasive legal documents with exceptional writing skills.
- Effective negotiation skills to facilitate settlements or favorable agreements outside of court.
- Experience in handling family law cases including custody disputes, divorce proceedings, child support matters.
- Familiarity with legal administrative processes within a busy law office environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and clients.
