Description:

Behind Every Case Is Something More Important

The business owners who come to Focus Law aren't just bringing us a lawsuit. They're bringing us a company they spent decades building, a partner they trusted, a family that depends on the outcome, and a reputation they can't afford to lose.

That is what we exist to protect.

We are a business litigation and trial firm. We help business owners break free from dishonest partners and bad deals, mostly through partnership, shareholder, member, and stakeholder disputes, breaches of fiduciary duty, fraud, and contract cases. We bring clarity to the chaos of high-stakes disputes. We tell clients the truth, keep them informed, prepare their cases with purpose, and stand with them when it matters most.

We're looking for an associate attorney who wants that work to be their work.

The Role:
This is a role for a litigator who wants real responsibility, real courtroom experience, and a path to becoming a trial attorney.

You will work alongside senior attorneys and firm leadership on live business disputes. You will help build case strategy, draft the documents that move cases forward, talk with clients, and take part in hearings, depositions, mediations, and trial preparation. We'll mentor you. We'll also expect you to own your assignments, use sound judgment, and keep every matter moving toward a better position for the client, every week.

Your responsibilities will grow as your skill and judgment do.

What You'll Do:
  • Handle assigned parts of business litigation matters from intake through resolution, with appropriate guidance and supervision
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, meet-and-confer letters, mediation briefs, and other litigation documents
  • Research the law and turn it into clear, practical recommendations, not just memos
  • Contribute to case strategy, factual investigation, evidence review, and issue identification
  • Review and analyze contracts, correspondence, business records, and document productions
  • Prepare deposition outlines, exhibits, and materials for hearings, mediations, and trial
  • Prepare for and take part in hearings, depositions, mediations, client meetings, and trial, as fits your experience and assignments
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, vendors, and the team
  • Record time accurately and promptly
  • Manage deadlines with careful attention to detail
  • Work with attorneys and paralegals to advance cases efficiently and toward the client's actual objectives

How We Work: Our Core Values

We hire for skill. We keep people for character. These four values describe how we practice law, and we'll ask you about them in the interview.

Integrity – our word and our work align.
We tell clients the truth, including the risks, the costs, and the hard facts. We don't sugarcoat or say what's easy to hear. We protect confidences, take ownership, and follow through. Clients should feel seen, protected, and represented.

Courage – we choose bold advocacy over comfort.
We face hard conversations, hard decisions, and hard battles directly. We don't build strategy around fear or the path of least resistance. We do the analysis, prepare the argument, and let the judge decide.

Adaptability – we think sharply, move quickly, and pivot with purpose.
Every case, opponent, and judge is different. We adjust to the facts and the pressure without becoming scattered or careless, and we keep learning until we find the strongest path forward.

Self-leadership – we lead ourselves first.
We demand the best of ourselves before we demand it of anyone else. Preparation, discipline, accountability, and follow-through aren't supervised into us. We bring them.

You'll Thrive Here If You
  • Want to become a trial attorney and welcome time in the courtroom
  • Understand that a business dispute is often a personal crisis for the person living it
  • Would rather give a client a hard truth than a comfortable answer
  • Prepare before it matters, not the night before
  • Take initiative, follow through, and own your work, including your mistakes
  • Connect every task to what the client is actually trying to achieve
  • Value mentorship and want to earn increasing independence
  • Want to grow with a firm over the long term, not pass through one

This Probably Isn't the Right Fit If You

  • Prefer to stay in research and drafting and away from clients and the courtroom
  • Need a large-firm structure with layers of review before work leaves your desk
  • Are looking for a fully remote role
  • See clients as files rather than people

Qualifications:
  • Active member in good standing of the State Bar of California
  • Three to six years of business litigation experience preferred
  • Experience drafting pleadings, handling discovery, researching, and preparing motions
  • Hearing and deposition experience preferred; trial, arbitration, or mediation experience a plus
  • Strong writing, analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced practice
  • Openness to feedback and to learning the firm's approach to strategy and client service
  • Comfort with legal technology and willingness to learn new tools

Work Environment:
This is an in-person role at our Anaheim Hills office. Being together supports training, mentorship, and collaboration, especially during onboarding.

Attorneys manage their own workloads, meet deadlines and billing expectations, and keep clients informed. You'll attend hearings, depositions, mediations, and other proceedings as your matters require.

Compensation:
  • Base salary: $130,000–$160,000, based on experience, skills, and other job-related factors
  • Bonus: Performance-based, tied to individual and firm performance

Benefits & Perks:
  • Monthly stipends toward medical, Wi-Fi, and cell phone expenses
  • Firm-provided laptop
  • We're working toward firm-wide health insurance and a retirement plan, with a goal of introducing both within the next 12 months. We want to be straight with you: these benefits are not available today.

Time Off & Flexibility

We support flexibility in scheduling and time off within our in-person arrangement. Attorneys coordinate time away with the team and make sure deadlines, clients, and cases stay covered. The firm also observes designated U.S. holidays.
