Description:

About the firm.
Rencher Law Group is a plaintiff-side civil litigation firm representing individuals and families in matters involving wrongful death, elder abuse and neglect, catastrophic injury, medical malpractice, and serious personal injury.

We are a small team by design - we take fewer cases than we could, prepare each one as if trial is certain, and decline to settle short. Our managing attorney's path to the law ran through the United States Marine Corps and a hospital trauma bay before two decades in California courtrooms on both sides of the aisle, and that orientation toward service and preparation defines the firm. We have been recognized on The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100 list five consecutive years, and our attorneys are members of the Million Dollar and Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forums.

The role.
We are hiring an Associate Attorney to take on substantive responsibility from day one. This is not a document-review position. The associate will carry their own caseload under the supervision of the managing attorney, with direct client contact, court appearances, motion practice, written discovery, deposition responsibility, and meaningful involvement at every phase of litigation through trial. The cases are serious. The work is real. The expectations are high.

What you will do.
  • Manage a docket of active matters across the firm's practice areas, with full ownership of case strategy under partner supervision
  • Conduct fact investigation, work with experts, and develop the medical, regulatory, and evidentiary record that supports each case
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and discovery - and argue them
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, and expert witnesses
  • Appear at law-and-motion calendars, case management conferences, mandatory settlement conferences, and mediations
  • Prepare cases for trial alongside the managing attorney and second-chair as cases proceed to trial
  • Maintain direct, professional, and compassionate communication with clients - many of whom are navigating the worst chapter of their lives

What we are looking for.

  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California (required)
  • Two to four years of civil litigation experience, plaintiff- or defense-side
  • Demonstrated writing ability - clear, persuasive, and grammatically clean
  • Comfort in court and in front of clients
  • Sound judgment in high-stakes, fact-intensive cases
  • The intellectual honesty to recognize what you do not yet know, and the work ethic to learn it quickly
  • Genuine interest in elder abuse, wrongful death, medical malpractice, or catastrophic injury work - not as a stepping stone to something else

What earns extra consideration.

  • Prior experience handling elder abuse, nursing home, medical malpractice, or wrongful death matters
  • Background or training in healthcare, nursing, or emergency medicine
  • Defense-side experience in healthcare, insurance, or institutional litigation
  • Trial experience, including misdemeanor trials, small civil trials, or significant second-chair involvement
  • Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Tagalog language fluency

What we offer.

  • A docket of meaningful cases and the autonomy to handle them
  • Direct mentorship from a managing attorney with two decades of trial experience on both sides of the bar
  • Collaborative work with established co-counsel on select matters, providing exposure to a wider trial-bar network
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonus tied to case outcomes
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid time off, paid holidays, and CLE/Bar dues coverage
  • Hybrid schedule with regular in-office presence at our San Francisco location

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Promising candidates will be invited to a first-round interview with the managing attorney, followed by a working session with the team. We respond to every applicant.
