Nature of Work:This is a full-time position in the Office of the State's Attorney, Special Victims Unit. The position entails the investigation, preparation, and prosecution of criminal cases in Harford County. The Assistant State's Attorney will be under the supervision of the State's Attorney and will serve at the pleasure of the State's Attorney.
Examples of Duties:
The position will require the screening and preparing of cases for trial, as well as the litigation of those cases, in the Child Advocacy Center. Cases may be handled in the District Court of Maryland for Harford County and/or Circuit Court for Harford County. Typical cases in the Child Advocacy Center including but are not limited to, physical and sexual abuse of children, neglect of children, as well as the possession, distribution, and manufacturing of child pornography. Cases may also include other types of Special Victims Unit cases, including domestic violence and sexual assault. Contacting, interviewing, and preparing adult and child victims and witnesses for all court appearances is required. Presentation of cases before the grand jury may also be required. Handling pre-trial motions hearings, bail review hearings, post-verdict hearings, and drafting all pleadings related to the prosecution of cases is required. The position may also require responding to and litigating post-conviction proceedings.
Selected candidates will work in an interdisciplinary environment in the Family Justice Center along with allied agencies and community groups consistent with their prosecutorial duties. Selected candidates should be able to effectively use the Maryland Rules of Evidence and Maryland's Criminal Procedure Article to prosecute violations of Maryland Criminal Law.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school, be admitted to the Maryland Bar as of the date of application, and be authorized to practice law before the Court of Appeals of Maryland. Prior prosecution experience of Special Victims Unit crimes involving children is strongly preferred, although not required.
