Responsibilities:
Represents indigent persons charged with crimes in the County. Defends individuals charged with felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic cases for which a sentence of incarceration may be imposed. Provides effective representation to clients who are frequently illiterate, uneducated, and uncooperative while maintaining a large and varied caseload.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Zealous, holistic representation of clients at every stage of the criminal process
  • Ability to competently and resourcefully manage an active felony caseload
  • Research and prepare court orders, motions, legal memoranda and other documents
  • Communicate with clients, team members, and resources for optimal client outcomes
  • Seek professional development through training, continuing legal education, and trial skills courses

Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties:
  • Demonstrated commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense
  • Criminal trial experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage an active caseload
  • Strong client advocacy and communication skills

Required licenses or certifications:
  • South Carolina State Bar License or eligible to be licensed within ninety (90) days of hiring
  • Valid South Carolina motor vehicle operator license

Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education and Experience
  • Graduate Degree
  • 3 to 5 years' experience
