General Responsibilities:
Responsible for assisting the Prosecuting Attorney in the representation of the State of West Virginia regarding criminal matters/allegations/violations regarding adults and/or juveniles and/or the Department of Health and Human Resources in juvenile abuse and neglect matters. Supervision may be given to clerical personnel. Direction may be provided by the Prosecuting Attorney, Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney(s) and/or Office Manager.
Essential Tasks:

- Appears in Magistrate and Circuit Court for a variety of matters such as trials, sentencing, guilty pleas, etc.
- Interviews victims and other witnesses.
- Reviews cases for prosecutorial merit.
- Prepares motions and other court pleadings.
- Prepares/oversees preparation of petitions alleging abuse or neglect.
- Appears in Circuit Court for various hearings relating to abuse and neglect matters.
- Works with child protective services workers, police officers and in-house investigators.
- Does accurate and thorough preparation for each case; to include review of law, preparation of arguments, negotiations with opposing counsel/guardian ad litem and research.
- Drafts documents, motions, responses to motions, forms, etc. for post convictions, extraditions, interstate agreements on detainers, etc.
- Contacts or directs contact with victims of crime & police officers regarding disposition of cases.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of court procedures and criminal law.
- Ability to research and compile court cases as needed.
- Ability to contact and interview victims and witnesses.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people under sometimes emotional conditions.
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of West Virginia
- Prior prosecution experience preferred.
