The Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney's office is accepting applications for a full-time Assistant Prosecuting Attorney position. We are specifically seeking applicants with a strong interest in the prosecution of domestic violence and related victim-centered cases. Requirements:
Qualifications:
  • Admission to the Missouri Bar (or eligibility for admission).
  • Comfort with frequent court appearances and a willingness to take cases to trial when appropriate.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability, including follow-through on deadlines, discovery, and case preparation.
  • Steady temperament under pressure and the ability to make thoughtful decisions quickly when needed (including on-call situations)

Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and evaluate case referrals from law enforcement, with an emphasis on domestic violence-related investigations.
  • Draft and file criminal charges, including orders of protection violations and related offenses.
  • Prosecute felony and misdemeanor cases through trial or plea, including intimate partner violence matters.
  • Appear frequently in court, handling a variety of proceedings, including bench trials, jury trials, bond hearings, and motion practice.
  • Work closely with victim advocates, law enforcement, and community partners to support victim safety and case outcomes.

Preferred Characteristics: 
The Strongest Applicants Will Typically Demonstrate:
  • Previous prosecution and/or courtroom experience is preferred but not required.
  • Interest in domestic violence prosecution, victim advocacy, trauma-informed practice, or related work.
  • Sound judgment and professionalism in high-stakes, high-emotion cases.
  • Strong communication skills—especially the ability to explain legal decisions clearly to victims, law enforcement, and non-lawyers.
  • Trauma-informed mindset and the ability to work effectively with victims and witnesses while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Team-first approach, with the ability to collaborate closely with victim advocates, paralegals, and fellow attorneys.
