Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Novelis Legal team is seeking an experienced litigator to lead and manage a broad portfolio of complex litigation matters for the company globally. This role will have primary responsibility and strategic ownership of disputes across a range of legal and business areas including commercial contracts, environmental matters, insurance coverage disputes, torts, and intellectual property. The attorney in this role will partner closely with other members of the litigation, labor, and employment (“LLE”) team as well as internal stakeholders and manage outside counsel to drive efficient, high-quality outcomes aligned with business objectives. Successful candidates will have a combination of significant law firm experience and/or in-house legal experience, strong legal and business judgment, and be able to operate independently and collaboratively. This role offers the opportunity to play a central, visible role in managing meaningful litigation matters for a global organization, with significant responsibility, autonomy, and influence. It is well-suited for a seasoned litigator looking to apply deep litigation expertise in a strategic in-house setting.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as lead in-house counsel for Novelis disputes, with end-to-end ownership and management of assigned matters.
  • Provide substantive and practical legal advice, counseling, and support to senior executives, management, and others related to Novelis Inc. and its worldwide subsidiaries in areas including pre-litigation, litigation, investigations, and alternative dispute resolution to assist meeting Novelis' objectives.
  • Develop and execute litigation strategy in close coordination with internal stakeholders, including business, compliance, risk, insurance, finance, and senior leadership.
  • Represent Novelis in all stages of civil litigation, compliance, and regulatory matters, including activities such as discovery, motion practice, expert strategy, trial preparation, trial/arbitration, and appellate matters.
  • Select, manage, and oversee cases assigned to outside counsel, including budget-setting, staffing, performance management, and attending court hearings, settlement conferences, mediations, and arbitrations with outside counsel.
  • Evaluate risk, exposure, and settlement strategies for disputes; provide clear, practical advice to business leaders on dispute posture and options; negotiate settlements and draft associated agreements.
  • Partner with internal teams to identify patterns and root causes of disputes and proactively mitigate future litigation risk.
  • Support internal and external reporting, reserve/accruals processes, and escalation processes for litigation matters.
  • Investigate pre-claim matters and analysis of filed disputes by conducting employee interviews and reviewing relevant records.
  • Prepare and provide training on litigation and risk management matters.
  • Support implementation of the Novelis Litigation-Labor-Employment (“LLE”) Center of Excellence and assist in development of LLE policies, playbooks, SOPs, metrics, and process improvements to enhance consistency and efficiency across matters.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active bar license in good standing in at least one state (preferably active Georgia bar license).
  • 10+ years of experience at a top-tier law firm and/or corporate law department (international / multinational experience a plus).
  • Experience managing a wide range of litigation and pre-litigation matters and demonstrated experience managing complex, high-stakes litigation.
  • Excellent communication, writing, analytical, organization, and negotiation skills.
  • Teamwork-oriented attitude and ability to collaborate with company personnel at all levels.
  • Excellent legal and business judgment and ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Comfort partnering with senior leaders and presenting on complex or sensitive matters.
