Your Impact:The Lowe's Legal Department serves as an innovative, proactive and strategic business partner focused on accelerating profitable growth while protecting the Lowe's brand. The Assistant General Counsel (AGC) serves as a strategic deputy to the Vice President of Litigation, Insurance, and Risk Management. This role provides executive-level legal counsel, leadership, and operational oversight across Lowe's enterprise litigation, insurance, and risk management programs. The AGC leads a team of attorneys and risk professionals responsible for advising on complex litigation, claims, risk financing, insurance placement, and related compliance matters. This leader ensures that the Legal and Risk Management functions operate in alignment with Lowe's strategic, financial, and operational goals — protecting the brand, enabling business agility, and optimizing financial outcomes. The Assistant General Counsel is a subject matter expert in at least one area of law or have mid-level understanding of three or more areas of law or lines of business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Counsels and interacts with executives and business segment managers; translates legal analysis and principles into practical business solutions.
- Establishes a rapport and working relationship with business managers to encourage the proactive use of in-house legal counsel.
- Serves as a trusted advisor and business partner for senior executives on key enterprise-wide strategic initiatives.
- Oversee complex, high-stakes litigation portfolios and manage relationships with external counsel to ensure cost efficiency, strategic alignment, and optimal outcomes.
- Supports cross-functional alignment with Finance, Treasury, HR, and Operations on legal exposure, reserves, and enterprise risk posture.
- Provides support for the enterprise risk management and insurance programs, including workers' compensation, property, casualty, liability, and executive risk lines.
- Proactively identifies emerging risk, compliance, and litigation trends; develops and executes forward-looking mitigation strategies.
- Partners with actuaries, brokers, and TPAs to analyze loss trends, reserve adequacy, and collateral requirements.
- Supports the development of annual insurance budgets and oversee renewals, program structure, and captive management.
- Collaborates with Finance and Treasury to align insurance strategy with company risk appetite and financial goals.
- Oversees insured claims and coverage recovery efforts, including litigation involving indemnity, subrogation, and policy disputes.
- Manages and delegates work for a team of legal professionals ensuring work assignments are assigned, legal risks are being proactively identified, training is prepared, memorandums are delivered, and legal matter presentations are completed.
- Directs and evaluates associates' career growth and performance ensuring associates are supported and the team is engaged and delivering on all plans.
- Communicates with contacts inside and outside of the company representing and protecting the Lowe's organization.
- Liaises with external legal counsel on complex legal issues and represents Lowe's externally with regulators, insurers, and professional associations to advance company interests.
- Establishes corporate counsel organizational strategies by contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction, aligning functional objectives with organizational objectives.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Other Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited school and 12-15 years practicing law in a law firm or in-house legal department
- 5-7 Years Direct experience in commercial and consumer litigation or retail transactions, or a combination of experience in those two areas
- 5-7 Years Working closely with senior leadership (VP and above)
- 3-5 Years Regulatory experience and resolving conflict and negotiating resolutions with federal, state and local agencies
- License to practice law in at least one state (or foreign jurisdiction, if lawyer is providing services to Company affiliates in that jurisdiction)
- Experience in legal leadership roles within relatively large corporate entities
- Experience managing issues encountered by a multi-national retailer
- Leadership experience (Director and above) managing attorneys and professionals
- License to practice law in at least one state (or foreign jurisdiction, if lawyer is providing services to Company affiliates in that jurisdiction)
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3-5 Years Direct experience with data-informed decision-making by using analytics to drive transparency, improve legal and risk performance, and influence executive strategies
- Experience with workers' compensation, casualty and property insurance placement, and claims oversight
- Prior partnership with actuaries, brokers, or TPAs to evaluate loss projections and reserves
