Description: The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission is seeking applicants for an assistant general counsel position to provide legal support and represent the Commission in a wide array of matters, including the following:Enforce rules and regulations applicable to passenger motor carriers.
- Draft orders on behalf of the Commission in administrative proceedings, including carrier application and enforcement proceedings.
- Conduct litigation in federal courts to enforce Commission requirements.
- Assert and/or defend the interests of the Commission before state courts and administrative agencies.
- Provide advice and counsel to the Commission on matters relating to employment law, government open meetings, the Affordable Care Act, and other internal issues as they arise.
- Draft legal opinions interpreting and applying the Commission's enabling legislation upon request of affected parties.
- Respond to public records requests consistent with the requirements of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
- Review contracts for legal sufficiency.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have knowledge of administrative law, excellent research and writing skills, litigation experience in state or federal trial and appellate courts, and strong academic credentials. Familiarity with the federal motor carrier safety regulations is desirable. Maryland Bar membership, or membership in the District of Columbia Bar and the ability to secure admission to the Maryland Bar within nine months of appointment to the position is required.
Compensation: Attorney will be hired at a salary equivalent to the federal GS-13 level ($120,579-$156,755), depending upon experience. Benefits include pension plan, employer subsidized health, dental, and life insurance, 132 parking/transit benefit, paid federal holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
