Overview:
We in the Diocese of Rockville Centre make up the Roman Catholic Church on Long Island. As a sacramental community, we are one with the Catholic Church throughout the world, while here at home we are united under our Diocesan Bishop, Bishop John O. Barres, to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ as one family of faith and to celebrate this life in our liturgy, sacraments, prayer and service.

The Assistant General Counsel provides legal services and guidance to the Diocese, its parishes, schools and affiliated entities. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role ensures compliance with applicable laws, supports risk management efforts, and advises on a wide range of legal matters affecting the Diocese's mission and operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice on matters including contracts, leases, employment, real estate, corporate governance, insurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, leases, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant laws, regulations and case law.
  • Assist with the management of litigation and coordination with outside counsel as needed.
  • Anticipate legal risks, identify proactive solutions and develop internal policies and procedures to mitigate risk across the diocese.
  • Ensure diocesan operations comply with federal, state, and local laws, as well as canon law where applicable.
  • Advise on issues related to the diocesan insurance program and risk management programs.
  • Provide counsel to parishes, schools and other diocesan entities as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the mission and values of the Catholic Church.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in New York state and in good standing.
  • 3-7 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in employment, nonprofit, corporate, business or real estate law.
  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with strong knowledge of the Catholic Church.
  • Car required and ability to travel throughout Long Island.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, lay leadership and all staff.
  • Commitment to the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.

Salary Range: $130,000 - $160,000 depending on experience, qualifications and education.
