Overview:
Microsoft's Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA) organization is seeking an experienced managing attorney to join the Microsoft Security legal team and deliver great impact to Microsoft, its customers, and the world, as we progress in strengthening our trust relationship with our customers.

As the Assistant General Counsel, you will be responsible for supporting core, high-impact Microsoft business units in Device Management, Customer Security & Trust, the National Security Team, the Threat Analytics Center, and Privacy legal support for the Digital Crimes Unit.

With an established team of attorneys under your leadership and management, you will be accountable for providing legal support to product engineering and security operations teams.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree or international equivalent degree AND 9+ years' experience as a practicing attorney in the areas of technology, commercial, corporate law and regulatory compliance.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction
  • 3+ years' experience in-house counsel or government experience.
  • 3+ years' experience leading and managing diverse teams and driving strategic initiatives.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:
  • Legal business acumen and experience providing legal counsel on AI, technology and security related matters.
  • Ability to initiate and lead cross-functional strategic projects across a large matrixed organization.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate legal analysis with consideration to business goals, risk tolerance and external stakeholder priorities.

Legal Counsel M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $160,700 - $284,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $207,700 - $311,500 per year.

Responsibilities:
People Management:
  • Deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and embody our culture and values
  • Lead and manage the legal team supporting Device Management, CISO, and applicable CST organizations, fostering a high-performance culture.

Legal Advice and Counsel:
  • Shape and deliver on Microsoft's approach to handling security incidents at scale, with a focus on high-impact security incidents.
  • Provide key contributions to Microsoft's overall legal strategy in the security space.
  • Evaluate and influence Microsoft's approach to ongoing regulatory compliance across multiple trust domains from privacy, cybersecurity, competition law and responsible AI.
  • Provide strategic legal counsel to senior executives on a wide range of legal and regulatory issues.
  • Develop trusted advisor relationships with business clients and executives, in alignment with their team members.
  • Coordinate with team members to understand clients' strategy and assist them in developing creative solutions to mitigate potential risk arising from legal issues.

Communication and Operational Excellence:
  • Simplify and summarize highly complex/multi-dimensional issues into actionable strategies and recommendations.
  • Cultivate deep partnerships with multiple internal Microsoft teams, within CELA (across legal, policy, regulatory affairs, and global affairs) and across business units such as security operations, external communication teams, products and service engineering teams and customer support.
