Position Function
The primary function of this professional position is providing legal support and advice to Ball State University's Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA), which works with faculty and staff in pursuit of external funding for research and other activities consistent with the educational mission of the University. This position will also be involved in providing a wide range of other legal services to the University, including, but not limited to, contract review, legal research, and other projects as assigned.

Minimum Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

Minimum Experience:
At least one to three years of relevant experience.

Minimum Other
Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex issues for a diverse audience; strong interpersonal skills; flexibility; and ability to collaborate in a collegial manner with administrators, faculty, staff, students and others.

Authorization to work in the US Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Preferred Experience:
Prior experience working with sponsored projects, government contracts, etc. Prior experience working for an institution of higher education or a public/governmental entity.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Ranking 1

Job Duty
Provide direct legal support and guidance to the University's Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA), which involves engaging with them on a regular basis. Review and advise on legal aspects of SPA-related agreements, including, but not limited to, grants, subawards, data transfer and use agreements, and other contracts with government agencies and community partners. Partner with SPA to evaluate the processes and workflow between the offices to enhance efficiencies and effectiveness and to address risk, with the goal of maximizing clarity and minimizing complexity of processes. Perform legal research on SPA-related issues. Maintain a current knowledge of state and federal laws, legal opinions, and other guidance, standards, and practices impacting SPA's work.

Draft, negotiate, and review contracts and other documents related to complex business transactions in areas that may include, but are not limited to, procurement, real estate, charter schools, licensing and trademarks, and professional services.
