Key responsibilities in your new role
- Manage IP and non-IP prelitigation and litigation matters. Actual litigation experience required in the form of court appearances, filings, and depositions. Manage internal e-discovery obligations. Negotiate license agreements and settlements. Formulate and present risk assessments to senior management
- Manage one or more patent portfolios: Embed with inventor community to support and manage one or more patent committees. Contribute to portfolio strategy in line with business and company goals. Provide advanced assistance in the continued development and implementation of patent strategy. Collect and maintain data relating to the competitive patent landscape
- Patent prosecution: Respond to domestic and foreign patent application office actions with senior-associate level efficiency. Mentor paralegals and junior patent counsel where necessary. Support Company filing strategy by generating and interpreting patentability searches. Coordinate with outside counsel on drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications, and maintaining all related documentation
- Support intellectual property and litigation issues in commercial transactions, M&A, and other investments
- Respond promptly to requests from internal clients, and summarize and communicate legal risks in a way that business people can understand that pragmatically balances risk with the Company's business objectives
- Provide leadership on cross-functional teams, identify legal issues, and provide legal options / analysis of possible legal solutions, all while interacting with external counsel, advisors, external vendors, and business
- Keep informed of new laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting the Company, and assisting with the development of policies and training as needed
Your Profile
Qualifications and skills to help you succeed
- J.D. from a nationally recognized law school and member of the California state bar. Technical undergraduate or graduate degree
- At least six years of experience in sophisticated legal practice (either in a large law firm or a combination of a large law firm and in-house experience)
- Registered to practice before the USPTO
- Excellent organizational and planning skills and the capacity to simultaneously handle a variety of complex matters under deadline pressure and with minimal supervision
- Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks
- Ability to form strong working relationships with other employees and partners while maintaining firm adherence to proper legal standards
- Sound business judgment and strategic thinking. Flexibility and an interest in working on a broad variety of legal matters in order to understand and advise the Company on legal implications of its business strategy
