As Assistant General Counsel, you will provide advice and counsel in supporting the legal needs of the M Community including business lines, functional areas and Member Firms. In this role, you will serve as a partner to the Chief Legal Officer as related to life insurance regulations, corporate governance matters, and assisting with developing and implementing corporate and member firm agreements, policies, and guidelines. You will be responsible for contract management, including advising, negotiating, drafting and reviewing all manner of agreements involving M.

Responsibilities:
  • Review, draft, negotiate a wide variety of business-related contracts and agreements
  • Support compliance team in regulatory exams, interpreting regulatory/legislative requirements
  • Support government relations in responding to proposed regulation/legislation
  • Manage litigation/arbitration matters
  • Remain current on regulatory and litigation matters that impact our industry/products, keep relevant stakeholders apprised, develop mitigating strategies
  • Work with company stakeholders to ensure proper collection of electronic documents and files
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on important legal issues
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, educational resource, and strategic adviser, to business leaders and colleagues on a wide variety of corporate, securities, and insurance law

Qualifications:
  • J.D. required and in good standing with the state bar association
  • 7+ years relevant experience in the life insurance products and/or financial industry preferred
  • Experience with drafting and reviewing commercial contracts required
  • Relevant experience in either a private practice or in house setting
  • Relevant securities licenses a plus
  • Strong business acumen with executive presence
  • Extensive face-to-face client experience at all levels of an organization with a proven ability to build strong relationships and work cross functionally
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines employing sound judgment in balancing priorities
  • Knowledge of FINRA and SEC rules and regulations a plus
  • Exceptional organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Highly computer literate, with experience using Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint, or other document management software.
