Description:
Summary:Assistant Solicitors, under the direction of the County Solicitor, provide legal counsel to County leadership and departments on a variety of transactional and litigation matters. The Assistant Solicitor of Employment reports directly to a Deputy Solicitor and advises the Executive Director, Department of Human Services, and departmental leadership in employment related matters, in addition to assisting the Office of the Solicitor with other legal duties as assigned by supervising attorneys.
Essential Duties:
- Advise county leadership and departments on employment matters.
- Investigate and respond to complaints and concerns arising from Title VII, the ADA, FMLA, and internal employee policy.
- Under the supervision of the Solicitor and Deputy Solicitors, represent the county in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings.
- Attend grievance hearings and other meetings regarding compensation, benefits, working conditions, and other conditions of employment.
- Work with outside counsel on various litigation matters
- Conduct and defend depositions.
- Perform legal research and prepare legal memoranda
- Review and draft contracts as needed.
- Perform other legal tasks as assigned, providing legal support to the Solicitor, County Council, and county departments.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Member in good standing of the Pennsylvania Bar or ability to waive into the bar.
- Interest in developing expertise in employment and municipal law.
- Two or more years of employment law experience preferred; comparable organizational and/or litigation experience will be considered.
- Demonstration of strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to complete tasks independently and to meet deadlines.
- Experience with any of the following is strongly favored: Title VII, the ADA, FMLA, Workers Compensation, EEO/harassment investigations and general workplace complaint resolution.
