A Government Entity is currently accepting applications for the position of an Assistant County Attorney in the County Attorney's Office.

An Assistant County Attorney is responsible for assisting the County Attorney to handle all statutory duties in Minn. Stat. 388.051. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Representing all County Departments in legal matters that come to the attending of the County Attorney's Office, including reviewing files, drafting complaints and litigation documents, engaging in negotiation, reviewing and drafting contracts, researching and preparing memoranda, interviewing witnesses, and appearing in court;
  • Prosecuting felonies, gross misdemeanors, some misdemeanors, and juvenile delinquency matters;
  • Responding to requests for legal advice from County agencies, departments, and law enforcement;
  • Representing the County in child and adult protection, child support, adoptions, conservatorships/guardianships, and civil commitments;
  • Represents the State and the County in all stages of appeal;
  • Provides training sessions for law enforcement and human service employees; and
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Duty Frequency - Band / grade
  • Represents the County in litigation, including pleadings, motions, legal research, and court appearances; prepares cases for trial by analyzing investigator reports, interviewing persons involved, drafting legal documents, presenting evidence and arguments in court, and authority to negotiate settlements when determined appropriate. Represents the County and State in civil and criminal appeals in matters not resolved at trial court level. - Daily 30% - D6
  • Prosecutes felony, gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and juveniles' delinquency matters.- Daily 25% - D6
  • Drafts civil litigation, contractual documents, complaints, petitions, motions, memoranda, findings, orders, stipulations, post-trial memoranda, contracts, agreements, policies, and other legal documents in assigned matters of basic to highly complex difficulty. - Daily 10% - D6
  • Identifies, defines, evaluates, and effectively resolves problems facing county officials, department heads, and employees. Determines alternative courses of action and effectively recommends the most advantageous course of action by the officer, department head, or employee faced with the problem. Proceeds to assist in implementation of the solution. - Daily 10% - B2
  • Represents the County in child and adult protection, child support, conservatorships/guardianships, and civil commitment actions. - Daily 10% - D6
  • Represents the State and the County at all stages of appeal including preparation of appellate briefs in criminal, juvenile, and child protection appeals; manages all Human Services related appeals. - Monthly 10% - D6
  • Provides training for law enforcement and human service employees. - Monthly 5% - B2

Minimum qualifications & Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, we require a Juris Doctorate and a license to practice law in Minnesota. We will consider candidates who have taken the bar exam and are awaiting results. Prior experience in a County Attorney's office and at least 2 years of legal experience are preferred.
