Description:
Criminal prosecutors are given substantial responsibility early in their careers and generally start handling various cases beginning with making charging determinations, overseeing discovery, handling pre-trial litigation, plea negotiating with defense counsels, and ending with an agreed to sentence or presentation of the case in a jury trial. Opportunities to handle more serious and complex cases are afforded as more experience is gained.Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Prosecution of state law violations in criminal court
- Preparing cases including research, brief writing, drafting pleadings, trial preparation, eliciting testimony, and oral arguments before a jury or judge
- Plea negotiating with defense counsels
- Assisting law enforcement agencies in investigations and charging decisions
- Representing the state in mental health commitments, fine collection, juvenile delinquencies, and child welfare cases
- Attending and presenting professional development trainings
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Admission to the bar of the State of Iowa, or eligible to take and pass the next available Iowa Bar Examination
