Who We Are:
The Office of the County Attorney provides legal advice and services to County departments, agencies, boards, and commissions, as well as the County Council in all aspects of the government's operations.

Who we are looking for:
The Office is looking for an Assistant County Attorney I/II/III to represent the County Government in tax and procurement matters before State, Federal, and local administrative agencies and courts; draft and review agreements, legislation, regulations, and other legal documents; conduct negotiations; prepare and issues legal opinions; and collects debts owed to the County.

What You'll Be Doing:
The full-time Assistant County Attorney I/II/III for the Office of the County Attorney's Division of Finance and Procurement (https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/office-county-attorney/divisions) will be responsible for but not limited to working in the Office's Debt Collection Unit and will also act as counsel to various County departments requiring legal advice on procurement, commercial, grant, tax, and finance matters, including representing the County before administrative bodies and State and federal courts, as may be needed.

Note: Offsite, evening and weekend work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited university school of law.

Experience: Thorough four (4) years experience as an attorney, including some specialized (one (1) year) experience involving either local government law or permitting, land development and/or zoning.

Education: Graduation from an accredited university school of law.

Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience as an attorney, including trial experience.

Education: Graduation from an accredited university school of law.

Experience: One (1) year of post degree experience as a law clerk or in a similar capacity.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  • Experience in legal areas relevant to the Division of Finance and Procurement, including collections-related matters.
  • Trial experience.
  • Knowledge of local government law.
  • Ability to manage and remain effective when working with complex or challenging legal subject matters.
  • Skill in working collaboratively and maintaining professionalism in high-stress or sensitive situations, such as debt collection matters.
