Duties Description: The New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions is seeking candidates for an Assistant Counsel position in the Deputy Commissioner's office. Under the direction of a supervising attorney, the incumbent will participate in the review and development of legislation. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide legal advice to OP staff and stakeholders related to the professions;
  • Assist in the coordination and review of pending legislation and work with stakeholders to develop clear and concise technical guidance;
  • Provide guidance and assist in the development of OP legislative initiatives and proposals;
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics and prepare reports and memoranda for internal and external stakeholders;
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to assist in the development of policy;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be admitted to the New York State Bar AND have two years of relevant, post-graduate experience, including significant experience reviewing, interpreting, and drafting legislation.

Additional Comments
Conditions of Employment: This position is in the exempt class and the incumbent will serve at the discretion of the Commissioner of Education. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This position allows for the opportunity to telecommute up to 30% each bi-weekly pay period and is granted at the discretion of the supervisor and the appointing office. This position will require 10% in-state/Statewide travel. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
