The Assistant City Prosecutor is responsible for all aspects of municipal prosecutions and appeals including appearing in court, conducting trials and all aspects of motion work; provides assistance with other civil and criminal matters within the jurisdiction of the city; performs legal research; prepares legal documents related to municipal court cases and appeals to district court; answers legal questions from law enforcement and other internal partners; provides training to stakeholders, and assists the City Prosecutor, other Prosecutor's Office staff, and members of the City Attorney's Office as needed in matters within the jurisdiction of the city.

Assistant City Prosecutor II Pay Range: $101,088 - $123,295
*Hiring Bonus: $2,500***

The Assistant City Prosecutor II is responsible for all aspects of municipal prosecutions and appeals and aiding with other civil and criminal matters within the jurisdiction of the city. A significant portion of their time will be spent appearing in court and conducting trials. This position is part of a two-level career progression of Assistant City Prosecutor I and II.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Represents the City in municipal court proceedings including dockets, trials, appeals, and administrative hearings.
  • Completes trial preparation including discovery; compiles information, records, and evidence; interviews witnesses; prepares written briefs and oral arguments.
  • Conducts research of State and Federal legislation and judicial decisions; researches a variety of legal issues on behalf of the city.
  • Focuses on innovation and process improvements to support work finding ways so that the office can move forward and become more efficient; provides advice and input on ordinance revisions pertaining to the traffic and public offense codes.
  • Works closely with the Court Services Officers in the monitoring and revocation of defendants.

Qualifications:
Experience: Three or more years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal court and criminal law, including trial experience, is required.

Education: A juris doctorate degree is required.

Licenses & Certifications: License to practice law in the State of Kansas and in federal court is required.
