About Us:About the Law Department
The Law Department, under the direction of the City Attorney, provides comprehensive legal services to the City (as a whole) as well as the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and all City entities. It represents the City in all legal matters, manages litigation, prosecutes ordinance violations, and provides legal counsel on issues affecting municipal interests. The Department reviews and approves contracts and official documents, prepares legislation, and performs additional duties assigned by ordinance or resolution. Organized to address a broad range of legal areas, including corporate, litigation, and prosecutorial functions, the Department ensures compliance with the law, supports effective governance, and protects the City's legal and financial interests.

Responsibilities:
What You'll Do:
- Represent the City in litigation matters where the City is an interested party, including motor vehicle accidents, property damage, employment, breach of contract, constitutional, and other civil cases.
- Handle all phases of litigation, including factual investigations, responses to charges of discrimination, pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation.
- Represent the City at hearings, trials, arbitrations, and appeals.
- Conduct substantial legal research and prepare written legal analyses, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
- Provide legal opinions, assess and manage legal risk, and support efforts to mitigate potential liabilities.
- Present legal matters before City Council, collaborate with other divisions within the Law Department, and perform related assignments as directed by the City Attorney.

For Positions with A Salary Grade of Ex6 or Higher that Require an Accredited Degree, Qualifying Professional Experience Must Be Obtained After the Accredited Degree Is Obtained.
- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Must be admitted to the Missouri Bar Association within six months of appointment.
- Must pass a background check as prescribed by the City.
