About This Position:
The City of Phoenix Law Department is comprised of two sections, the City Attorney's Office, which handles representing the City in civil matters, and the City Prosecutor's Office, which handles the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes committed in Phoenix.

This Attorney IV primarily supports the Communications Department by managing all aspects of Arizona Public Records Requests, including coordinating the collection of responsive records from multiple departments, reviewing documents, identifying and redacting confidential or exempt information, and ensuring timely, compliant responses. The role provides legal guidance on confidentiality laws, assists with trademark and intellectual property matters, and drafts or reviews communications-related contracts. The attorney also coordinates responses to special actions or legal challenges arising from public records processes and collaborates across departments to ensure consistent legal and communications practices. In addition, the attorney will provide legal counsel to smaller City departments as needed, offering guidance on contracts, ordinances and other legal issues as they arise. This position requires a candidate that demonstrates strong initiative, follow-through, flexibility, and effective cross-departmental collaboration.

Salary:
Pay Range: $126,734.40 - $177,444.80 annually

Hiring Range
: $126,734.40 - $168,272.00 annually

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four years of experience as a practicing civil or criminal attorney.
  • Experience in the practice of municipal law; the review, negotiation, and drafting of contracts or other primary responsibility for participation in transactional work.
  • Experience with significant client contact; primary responsibility for civil litigation, and pleading and motion-practice.
  • One year of government law practice; and a working knowledge of the legal subject matter involved with the department to which assignment will be made.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Admission to the bar of the State of Arizona.

Preferred Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience handling complex, high-volume projects within the legal environment while simultaneously supporting multiple clients.
  • Experience with municipal law including public records, procurement and open meeting law.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complicated contracts or other transactional work is also preferred.
