The City of Redding is accepting applications for the positions of Assistant City Attorney I/II in the City Attorney's Office.

The Assistant City Attorney is expected to provide timely and competent legal support to the City Attorney. In doing so, the Assistant City Attorney will provide comprehensive legal guidance to the City Council, department heads, and to the City's Executive and Leadership Teams. The Assistant City Attorney is also tasked with preparation of ordinances and resolutions, review of contracts, the direct management of the City's Code Enforcement Division, representation of the City during labor grievances, and defense of litigation filed against the City.

The ideal candidate must be familiar with municipal government structure and operations and the relationships to other jurisdictions. The ideal candidate should be highly adept at understanding and interpreting state and federal laws and constitutional provisions affecting municipal operations. The ideal candidate must be a highly skilled communicator who can speak and write effectively. Experience in the field of risk management is highly valued.

This position may be filled at either the Assistant City Attorney I or Assistant City Attorney II level depending upon the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected. The Assistant City Attorney II classification is distinguished from the Assistant City Attorney I classification by broad discretionary and decision-making responsibility, and the specialized nature of very complex legal work that is performed with little supervision. The Assistant City Attorney II is a managerial classification which may require management of the personnel of the City Attorney Office as well as personnel of other departments, as may be assigned from time to time by the City Attorney and/or City Manager. The Assistant City Attorney II may be required to attend night meetings of boards, commissions or the City Council.

Core Qualifications:
  • Must be a current member of the California State Bar Association.
  • Must be willing and able to attend evening meetings.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as an attorney engaged in the practice of civil law, preferably in a municipal setting.
  • In addition to the above, an Assistant City Attorney II will have at least one year of supervisory experience.

  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
